“Our vision, at Amazon, is to be Earth’s most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover virtually anything they want to buy online. With Amazon.in, we endeavor to build that same destination in India by giving customers more of what they want – vast selection, low prices, fast and reliable delivery, and a trusted and convenient experience,” said Greg Greeley, Vice President of International Expansion at Amazon.com in press release. “We’re excited to get started in India and we will relentlessly focus on raising the bar for customer experience in India.”
Amazon’s India service offerings in two categories — Books and Movies & TV — but the categories such as mobiles, cameras etc will be added to the website soon in the coming weeks.
Amazon also announced the launch of two new seller programs – ‘Selling on Amazon’ and ‘Fulfillment by Amazon’. The selling on Amazon will allow Indian retailers sell their products online on the site with no listing fees. The pay-as-you-go fulfillment service will allow sellers across India to send their products to Amazon’s fulfillment center located on the outskirts of Mumbai. Once an order is placed, Amazon packs and ships the order to the customer without the sellers having to do anything.
Amazon.in Book store features over 7 million print books across 200 plus categories including fiction, management, children’s books and academic publications. The Movies & TV shows store features a collection of over 12,000 titles in English and Hindi across DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and Video CD formats.
Amazon will compete with Indian online shopping services such as Flipkart, HomeShop18 and Snapdeal.
